Why federal agencies should buy local

Local sourcing is becoming increasingly important in our daily lives, and it’s not just about the food we eat.

buy localWhen it comes to professional services needed for delivery of government programs at the federal, state and local levels, buying local affords opportunities to improve agility, responsiveness, transparency and cost-effectiveness of service delivery.  By investing in businesses whose employees live and pay taxes in the communities served by an agency’s program, the government can see the impact of services firsthand.

Why Local Selection Matters

Depending on the procurement, a local firm may have better service capabilities based on ties to the community. Companies located near the site of a government program often have a better understanding of contract requirements because they have more insight into local needs and culture. In addition, a local provider may be more invested in the success of the program because of emotional ties to the job, while a company based outside the area may view the program as just another contract and revenue source.

What you need to know about the top federal contractors

In his farewell address to the nation, President Eisenhower warned against the economic and political influence of the rising military industrial complex: the relationship between government entities and private government contractors.

Yet almost 60 years later, with the government contracting industry so large that many call it a fourth branch of government, Eisenhower’s warning appears unheeded.

Proponents of the industry say that contractors keep the nation safe, doing work the government does not have the capability to do. Its critics, on the other hand, assert that contractors have an incentive to perpetuate war—the more weaponry contractors produce, the more profits they make.

Contractors find that doing business with government is increasingly risky

Federal contracting is increasingly becoming a high risk business, according to an industry survey scheduled to be released later this month.

The survey from consultant Grant Thornton shows nearly 40 percent of federal contractors achieved lower revenues this year compared to last year while 35 percent made greater revenue, Grant Thornton Principal Lewis Crenshaw said.

In 2011, by comparison, half of government contractors reported increased revenues and about 30 percent reported a decrease, Crenshaw said during a Dec. 14, 2012 event hosted by the Association for Federal Information Resources Management. The consultant plans to release its 18th annual government contractor industry survey later this month.

Defense contractors downsized in good times, report finds

The defense industry and Republican lawmakers have for months complained that sequestration — across-the-board budget cuts scheduled to begin on Jan. 2, 2013, and expected to hit the Defense Department especially hard — would devastate private contracting companies, forcing mass layoffs when the economy could least afford them.

A new report from a good government group, however, shows the industry has seen significant job losses during the past several years, even as the federal government shoveled more and more money to Defense contractors. The findings may suggest government spending and the contractor workforce are not as tightly correlated as sequestration critics fear.
